About Redhill Aerodrome
Redhill Aerodrome is a historic general aviation site in Surrey, active since 1934 and home to a wartime legacy as a Spitfire base during the Second World War. Today it’s a busy commercial hub handling around 41,000 flights a year, with a business park of aviation and non-aviation tenants sharing the site.
The Brief: A Sign 10 Years in the Making
Despite being a well-known landmark for over a decade, Redhill Aerodrome had gone ten years without proper signage. Previous attempts to commission a commercial sign installation had repeatedly fallen through — suppliers unable to deliver, projects stalling, the building left unmarked. When Redhill Aerodrome came to Pik Pik Pow, the brief was simple in principle and hard in practice: get it right, first time.
The Challenge: Access and Compliance on a Live Aviation Site
Two things made this high-level sign installation genuinely difficult:
Access & Traffic Management
The sign needed to go up 10 metres, on a building facing a busy road. There was no way to position a cherry picker safely without shutting down part of that road — so full traffic management had to be arranged and coordinated around the install.
Health & Safety Compliance
An active aerodrome with shared offices meant health and safety wasn’t a checkbox — it was the priority. Before a single panel went up, Pik Pik Pow submitted full RAMS (Risk Assessment & Method Statement), insurances, and operator licences for approval, meeting the standard expected on a live aviation site.
The Solution: Printed Aluminium Tray
- Main sign: 11m wide, mounted 10m up the building face
- Entrance sign: 1.5m wide, for ground-level visibility
- Construction: printed aluminium trays with a protective laminate finish, built for durability and weather resistance at height

The Result
A landmark sign that finally matches the scale of the site — visible from the road, the airfield, and everywhere in between. Ten years of false starts solved with one properly planned, properly permitted aluminium tray sign installation.
